Really no kidding. Just by logic there are lots more light switches, outlets and appliances dwarf the total number of computers, laptops and other computing devices ever sold. 1.9 billion devices today with an estimate of 9 billion devices in the next 4 years; the Internet of Things is turning into big business. Now imagine the first time you hear about all of your groceries being spoiled because a hacker turned up the thermostat on the refrigerator or when you come home to a multi- thousand dollar bill due to the fact that your house thermostat was set at 90 while you were away on vacation.
This opens up an entirely new world of cyber attacks and brings in an entire new level of security understanding that the average consumer is going to need to know.
On the larger ticket items I understand the need to connect them and protect them, traffic management systems; can save millions of dollars in wasted time, real time advertising; can improve the targeting of advertising to stuff that is relevant to me when I am passing, smart grids and smart water systems are critical to being better stewards of our environment but the need to connect all household items I think is a long way out.
