Shifting the department that is managing the Direct Benefit Transfer program out of planning and into the Finance Ministry is a good idea. I was sort of surprised to see it living in the Planning Commission in the beginning. The DBT program has covered over 2.8 million LPG transactions valued at R 116 crore in seven weeks. It said the location has been shifted because “the bulk of the work in DBT at the moment is in digitization of databases, re-engineering government processes for automating financial transactions, enrolling in Aadhaar and ensuring that every recipient has bank accounts seeded with Aadhaar”.
